London's housing crisis
London’s housing market has always demonstrated considerable dynamism, but the escalating cost of housing has generated considerable concern about the capital’s continued affordability and knock-on effects beyond the M25.
Professor Phil Hubbard and Dr Jon Reades are experts in mapping and understanding social change in the city. Building on a long tradition of research into gentrification at King’s College, their recent work uses cutting-edge machine learning techniques to predict changes over the next five years to neighbourhood-level incomes, affordability, skills, and occupations.
Against this backdrop, research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council is exploring the consequences of these changes in terms of the displacement of working populations, especially of established communities on council estates undergoing renewal.
